![]() LaTeX can be used as a standalone document preparation system, or as an intermediate format. LaTeX uses the TeX typesetting program for formatting its output, and is itself written in the TeX macro language. It also has a prominent role in the preparation and publication of books and articles that contain complex multilingual materials, such as Arabic and Greek. LaTeX is widely used in academia for the communication and publication of scientific documents in many fields. A TeX distribution such as TeX Live or MiKTeX is used to produce an output file (such as PDF or DVI) suitable for printing or digital distribution. The writer uses markup tagging conventions to define the general structure of a document, to stylise text throughout a document (such as bold and italics), and to add citations and cross-references. LaTeX markup describes the content and layout of the document, as opposed to the formatted text found in WYSIWYG word processors like Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages. In the last 12 years, I have tried TeXLive (on Windows / Mac / Ubuntu / Arch), MacTeX and MiKTeX and more than a dozen editors, and settled with TeXLive + TeXStudio on all platforms because there were no flaws present in other variants.LaTeX ( / ˈ l ɑː t ɛ k/ LAH-tek or / ˈ l eɪ t ɛ k/ LAY-tek, often stylized as L aT eX) is a software system for typesetting documents. Two weeks ago, I had to remove MiKTeX from my colleague’s computer because it was not installing a package that was not present in the local distribution (and biber could not be run or reinstalled at all) because she had to turn her thesis in the next day in TeXLive, everything was working as smoothly as it gets. MiKTeX is unofficial, and sometimes breaks on Windows-quite rarely, but seriously enough to bring your work to a halt. Besides that-and I cannot emphasise it enough-in 4 years, I have encountered many cryptic errors that were MiKTeX-specific on various colleagues’ computers that could not be replicated in TeXLive or Overleaf (that is using TeXLive). TeXMaker is becoming a thing of the past-compared to it, TeXStudio provides more features (in small things like dark theme support, or document parsing for better structure view, or better paragraph rewrapping etc.) and is being more actively developed. I would actually suggest two equivalent alternatives. ![]() Beamer Tutorial on Overleaf ( tutorial)ĭedicated users of this sub may write to the mods for a custom flair :) Related subs.Using Inkscape to draw figures ( workflow example).Alternatives: MetaPost, PSTricks, Asymptote Drawing diagrams, schemas, graphs, and pictures with TikZ ( examples| manual| manual). ![]() If you prefer video resources, Michelle Krummel on YT might be for you.The wiki-book on LaTeX: a quick and practical overview of LaTeX. ![]() EditTex - Easy tool to create LaTeX formulas and edit them inline.Overleaf (most popular online editor), also has great tutorials and templates.Whether you are just getting started with LaTeX and wondering what the fuss is about, here to share the clever trick you've discovered, or need urgent help with your bibliography, welcome to the LaTeX subreddit!
